CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES: A VIEW OF MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE international-style architecture; A Utopian Ideal

Modern architecture or modernist architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely.[1] The term is often applied to modernist movements at the turn of the 20th century, with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.[1] The term Modern architecture may be used to differentiate from Classical architecture following Vitruvian ideals, while it is also applied to various contemporary architecture styles such as Postmodern, High-tech or even New Classical, depending on the context. In art history, the revolutionary and neoclassical styles that evolved around 1800 are also called modern.
The concept of modernism is a central theme in the efforts of 20th century modern architecture. Gaining global popularity especially after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many architects and architectural educators, and continued as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while "Neo-modernism" has emerged as a reaction to Post-modernism.
Notable architects important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bruno Taut, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto.
Common themes of modern architecture include:
the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose
simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail"
materials at 90 degrees to each other
visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements)
the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else
use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic
particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

I enjoyed this documentary. I only wish that they had talked a little bit more about my favorite Arkansas architect, E. Fay Jones. He was an AIA award winning architect that designed some of the best mid century modern and post modern structures in Arkansas.

IMHO: MOST "Modern Buildings" look HORRIBLE!!! They look like an ABORTION!!! The rooftops are often cluttered with hideous HVAC units, and often gravel, tar, or other ecologically, aesthetically UNappealing materials!! ...... WHY Has there not yet been even 1,000+ Frank Lloyd Wright clones, and better?!...... What has the Cost/sq.ft. done over time?!.... Is ids going down, as with Moore's Law?....(as with modern Electronics)

Modern architecture is completely gross and tasteless. People don't realize the importance of having beautiful buildings and perhaps most of us are unaffected because we've never seen great, truly amazing architecture before. Don't believe me? Next time you're in your city, pay close attention to what the surrounding buildings make you feel. Petty? Small? Foreign? Sick? Can you honestly say "wow, this makes me proud to be a human, what a work of art- a true feat of engineering"?

My city is very old, and has many old buildings, but was also hit by the modernist wave of the cold war :( It is among the old buildigns which are small and made of wood, and the cobblestone streets, where I feel peaceful and not tense, and where I grasp the fresh air and enjoy my surroundigns. I feel happiness. Modern architecture just gives me headaches.

This video goes to show you that just because someone is an architect or a professor of architecture doesn't necessarily mean they have any artistic vision or taste in the least. How anyone can defend such soulless structures is beyond me. Thanks to the modern architects we live much of our lives in a utilitarian environment devoid of warmth, soul, and beauty.

Functional, but UGLY!  The mid-century modern houses are growing on me because of their glass and open spaces.  While I get the functionality of the office and college buildings, the "international" aspect of their design and purposeful lack of "ornamentation" and decision to stop "stealing" from the designs of the past has turned out the ugliest buildings man has ever created!  Sorry!  After 60+ years, I still can't "get" them !8-(

I found this to be a well-done and provocative analysis. I attended architecture school at North Carolina State University which was part of the College of Design, directly modeled on Gropius's Bauhaus. North Carolina, like Arkansas, apparently, was also a testing ground for modernist design principles, as the design school in Raleigh served as a sort of architectural hub for the region where (many) bad examples of this style of design coexist with the good. Modern architects of this era have not been largely held accountable for how their work "functioned" within the larger framework of urban design and the social and economic themes and forces that underpin their work. This is perhaps the greatest short-coming of the Bauhaus model and the legacy of mid-century modernism which limited the scope of architectural theory by divorcing it from the social sciences and the vitality of a larger cultural context in favor of an often dim technological fetishism.

I don't think there are many truly beautiful skyscrapers of taller buildings. Once you are too far removed from the human scale they all look unnaturally gangly and alienate humans. I am not a huge fan of the international style and Le Corbusier for that matter. But Mid century modern homes (did anyone count how many times they used that phrase?) got it right.

I watched this whole documentary hoping to better appreciate mid-century modern because, as they say here, it is kinda "hip" again. The major flaw with "function over form" is that you have ugly buildings that functioned really well when they were first built. However, as needs change you simply have an ugly building that's not as usable as it once was. Without an aesthetic appeal to warrant saving it, most will probably meet the wrecking ball.

This is a documentary about the brutality and inhumanity of modern architecture. Of course ,like all totalitarian models they couch it in feel good terms to justify corporate open prison cells where warmth ,nature and life are beaten in to submission by Ego. In short its fucking ugly . The New attitude is one of submission to the Nazi vision called Bauhaus . A vision that still rapes murders and destroys . Gropius was a thug who ripped the soul out of shelter . Of course they steal the moral high ground by using the form follows function argument brutally out of context . Its form following max profit and minnimum beauty. Simple Lines ? Yeah you get those in every prison cell .

man you are way off, most of the architects of the early modernism are now dead, so they can't be hipsters. This is all about functionality, it's about entering a room and don't have to turn on the lights because there's natural light everywhere, it's about having a peacefull house in a beautiful garden with a nice panoramic view through the window. The classic architecture is the souless one, the one that you don't have to think about solutions because it's all standard, the classic architecture screams capitalism, just look at wall street, what do you think those pillars mean? it's all about monumentality and fuck the people. Modernism is for people.

Simguy Simulation. There is no shortage of modern architecture in the UK or anywhere else where primadonna architects with no building experience trot out the usual gut wrenching, community destroying eye sore's and attach tiresome 'vision statements' to a drab concrete/glass shoebox held up by galvanised poles and the usual talentless placement of gabians held together by chicken wire. Yeah, its modern all right, like a Mc Donalds drive through. Neat, orderly and cold like a nuremberg rally. Is there anything more lame than a Hipster architect wearing an iconic Biker jacket on site with his designer lifestyle accessories trying to look cool, tough and relevant ? Dear god. I dont mind simple elegant and grounded. I hate Architecture that takes love and craftsmanship out of the equation and replaces it with empty statements that say 'fuck you ! Ive made it by sucking establishment cock and embracing the machine'. And look what that attitude has wrought in America. Trailer parks and gated communities. A nation divided by greed and ego.

how can modern architecture be post modern? Modern architecture is simple, honest and functional and expresses the values of that age unlike borrowing architecture from ancient societies that have no relevance nor function. you must be British a true island culture where everything else is not right unless it follows the narrow minded British viewpoint.

Grahamhg . The Russians pulled it off in Moscow's Underground . Check it out smart arse .There is a place for concrete and it was the Romans who first used it for their classical buildings. The point is this. Architecture should not make you feel intimidated or brow beaten .It should elevate and inspire. Even commercial/industrial architecture . Form follows function was originally quoted by Louis Sullivan who was before Le Corbusier. Then when Frank Lloyd Wright came along he said form and function are one.

Strange theory. It is unfortunate that your professor or whoever taught you made a mistake. "Form (ever) follows function" was a phrase coined by American architect Louis Sullivan. If you want to argue your point, don't get personal. Attacking someones race or culture is inappropriate.

"The main problem with capitalism is it's all about money. It's all about profit, at the expense of the society." And thats the very same reason why capitalism works very well. It increases advancement very fast. People create new inventions and items often with the idea of money coming to them. Rather simply we got to where we got because of this very same drive to help the self capitalism merely capitalizes on it. "Healthcare and education are the main examples of things that are necessary to the individual but are exploited in the capitalist system to the point where people can't afford them. " One of the reasons colleges are so expensive is because of the fact that student loans are hiking up the prices. Colleges charge more money because they know they can and the loans will pay for it. The people who lose out in the end are more often than not going to be middle class and lower families because federal government student loans are destroying the chances of a cheaper college. Public school education is pretty terrible and it has more to do with government and crappy management from it while private schools are doing a better job overall. but yes keep trying to blame it all on capitalism rather than the government itself. Healthcare has risen do to the advancement of technology. It isn't exactly cheap to get all the expensive equipment and necessary items for all the new medical treatments we are discovering. Without the money we won't get the new technology, and when we don't get it we get set back, and then things remain stagnant. Healthcare and the medical industry is only facilitated through money. If you want to make it cheaper there are multiple options, some recent ideas include group purchases where large groups of people get to put a pool of money together and in agreement with some insurance company get insurance. "People who support capitalism would rather some people exploit and make millions and billions rather than everyone have what they need." Everything has a cost. The people in these industries don't just get these things magically for free or make them for nothing. They all need money to make a lot of these things and to advance it. "I truly believe architecture is the key to creating a new type of society, where everything is provided, where everyone lives and works together in the same complex, all under one roof. Education, healthcare, food production, library, art, science, research and development facilities, etc. Where the focus is personal development, community, technology, etc. To look back at what we have lost in modern life, and look forward to the future at what will be, and bring the two together into a new form of society for the present. It has to be designed with these things in mind, to create a new utopian society where everyone has the freedom to pursue their goals, with every necessity provided, to work towards the common good, for the society and the world." Key word utopia.

what does the place that a building is in have to do with the style of the building being socialist conceptually or not? If the architect showed Socialistic tendencies and expressed those beliefs in his architecture, everything outside that building could still remain capitalistic. Although land prices have almost always been capitalistic except maybe for homesteading. Many modernist homes were built to provide affordable housing using off the shelf materials, simple designs without using unneeded materials which add cost just to be more ornate, and prototype designs that could be mass produced making them cheaper for the average joe. The Case Study homes are an example. I am not sure people use Socialist in a negative way all the time.
